Immigration & Visas
A guide to the DTV for remote workers and other eligible visitors, including categories, evidence, stay limits and work and tax considerations.
The legal position
The Destination Thailand Visa is a five-year multiple-entry route for eligible purposes, but each stay and activity remains subject to category-specific requirements.
The route is intended for qualifying remote work, approved activities and accompanying family members. Each group requires evidence suited to the purpose of the application and the responsible embassy or consulate.
A DTV allows a stay of up to 180 days per entry, with one extension of up to a further 180 days subject to approval. The holder must leave Thailand after the permitted stay and extension, while further entry remains possible during visa validity.
The workcation category is intended for qualifying remote work connected with overseas employers or clients. A DTV does not provide a Thai digital work permit or authorise employment with a Thai business.
Spending an aggregate of 180 days or more in Thailand in a calendar year generally makes an individual a Thai tax resident. Income from work performed in Thailand, foreign income and remittances require a separate tax assessment.
Applications are made through the responsible Thai embassy or consulate, using the Thai e-Visa system where applicable. Processing time and evidence requirements depend on the responsible post.
